Thread: Whats this?

Hi Gurus,
The attached picture showes a unit under my dash on my late 2007 build 09 registered W209 CLK convertible, it looks like a Mercedes item as the part of the loom that feeds it has the same fabric insulating tape around it as the rest of the loom but it has been added after build completion because its been soldered into the loom.

It has 2 very thin black wires coming out of it as well. The only reference to it on the web suggests it may be a RFID tag?

I suspect its a tracker (security tracking device). I suspect the thin wires are antennas or coax going to antennas (if about 2mm thick)

The black wires coming out are very thin, as thin as an antenna wire I had on a small FM transmitter that I used on the Kids in car DVD. The thin wire seems to be very long and disappears into the bowls of the car.

Do you think it would be safe to remove, I have recently removed part of a road angle system but I don't think it had anything to do with that but they where wired into the loom at the same point?
