Yes, I do understand that people, who buy S-class are rich, but they are in no way dumb and the way they bought this car is by managing their money wisely.
I guess, it is the same thing about S-class and Apple products - they are cool because they are cool and it has nothing to do with quality - pure style.
About car being wrong - you are probably right - after thinking about those couple years of owning this Merc, I do not think that our company had to bare all these unnecessary costs just because we needed a represent-able car. S-class is in no way as dependable and good as it was in 90ties and I think, everyone will admit that.
Why dont you buy the hard drive. Learn how to clone it and then sell the one you bought on ebay.

There is nothing to learn - it clones fine, by using linux dd - bmw i-drive community already does that. I have asked some service tehnicans and will get ahold of working system on monday or tuesday.
I am not eager to start making money on this - just want our system to be fixed and if my recipe works, it will be out on the net to help others not to spend too much. Everyone should make a backup of the data that is stored on a simple mechanic hard drive - that is my point, as an IT tehnican.

You are assuming that when it comes time to do a map update it will still work. That also needs to be checked.

Well, considering, I am living in Baltics, I do not wait for map update - it is useless here. For people, that have their own backup, that shouldn't make any problems at all.
For me, main usage for this system is aircon and car functions control (even that mechanic-look-a-like clock is controlled from that unit) and of course some music.
Also, I have found out that there are unofficial map updates for this system with 95% coverage, so someone has cracked the case already.
The only thing I hope for now is that everything is stored in that harddrive and not the flash chips on board, but I have a JTAG cable ready aswell and SPARTAN specs sheets ready.
