    Default Upgrading 01 C240 instrument cluster and radio to a 06 C280

    Hello everyone!

My advisor at the local Mercedes dealership and I have a disagreement. I want to upgrade my 01 C240 to the much more appealing instrument panel and radio of an 06 C280. He says it can't be done! I don't understand why I can't make it work if it's they both have the same W203 chassis. I've put in numerous after market radios in American cars so I think I'm up for the challenge. In my opinion if it fits in the dash then I should be able to adjust wiring or retrofit any applicable sensors and I should be able to get it to work.

    Is this possible?
I would like to get all the parts I need together before pulling my car apart. What parts are needed?

I would like to go as advanced as I can with the radio. The car has a stock cassette radio in it now. Would it be possible to add a command NTG2.5? I got a great deal on a virgin new style c-class gauge cluster and I need to make sure it's compatible with anything else I choose.

Yes the service advisor is correct. The parts list is actually much larger than you can first guess.

01 >>> 04 conversion (as done by me)
    ------------------------------
    - instrument cluster
    - ignition switch
    - wiring changes (as per Vito CGW wiring in GPS retrofit)
    - steering column switches
    - steering column
    - airbag.
    - radio / COMAND
    - upper switch row
    - AC controller

For me it wasnt so tough because I was going to change to
    - memory steering column
    - paddle shift
    - keyless go
    - climate control

So I needed those additional parts anyway.

Reason: The 05+ instrument cluster has a dependance on the CGW which your car doesnt have. The only car you can do this to, with reasonable cost are the 02 year models (and later) with any engine other than M111. It relies on a specific integration point in the changes to ESP / Engine controller. Otherwise it goes all pear shaped and hard to do.

With your engine you have some chance of doing it. If you have the correct steering column (was updated some time in 2001) then that is the worst problem overcome.

    Default Thanks!

Wow great info! So far no one has been able to give me a strait answer. I only get "ehhhhh... no"

The manufacturer part number for the gauge cluster I bought is A203-540-49-48. I'm not quite sure what the limiting factors are on this particular cluster or what specific year it's for. Somewhere between 03-05 i'm assuming. What parts need to be in my car to make just the gauge cluster work? I will ask my service advisor if these parts are in the car as soon as you let me know... Who knows, maybe I'll get lucky. I really want to make the cluster work.

As far as the command unit is concerned.. I've been doing alot of research and people are having much better luck installing aftermarket nav systems. I'm having a hard time finding one with solid reviews. I want a Garmin and it seems like Kenwood got their contract. I associate Kenwood with poor quality and outdated styling but they have the superior nav. Any suggestions on a particular unit to go with? Sony has style but they don't seem to dependable and I don't want a hole in my dash for a month at a time every year for repairs. I believe I have the D2B system in my vehicle. Is this possible? I know there's adapter cables to get the steering wheel controls to work. My main concern would be that if i put one of these adapters in then i'd be ble to raise and lower the volume but not access the vehicles main menu.

It all depends on your steering column. If you have a steering column which is compatible with the 2005 steering spiral then you have some reasonable chance of getting all of this to work.

The old style steering column seen in 2001 may only apply to M111. I am of the opinion that M112 engines had a different spiral and latch.

What you really must have at the bare minimum is
    - cluster (as you have indicated)
    - Central gateway
    - Central gateway wiring harness from Vito

This is just to get the cluster working.

If you have faults or errors then you will most likely also need
    - MAPS fuel senders left and right
    - MAPS wiring upgrade to Rear sam
    - New Rear SAM
    - new front SAM

2000 and 2001 were not so good for these types of upgrades. It seemed to work much better 2003 and after.

I contacted my service advisor and he said that he doesn't know. I've tried contacting multiple people and know one seems to know anything about it. Any suggestions on who I should contact? Thanks for all the help!

Why dont you just print the document here and take it to them.

Can you confirm if you have
    - Newer ESP (from late 2001)
    - Correct steering column
    - MAPS fuel sensors

Then maybe you can go further in this question.

As I said already. I made these changes to my car.
