    Default Adding back-up camera

More questions have left me even more confused & without answers. Is it possible to add/install the camera control module (CCM) to a 2006 W164? Furthermore, is it possible to add the CCM & link it to an aftermarket camera? If so, how is this done? The problem is that I do not have a pre-cutout in the door for an oem camera, and the oem camera is apparently CMOS, so that's why I am looking to go aftermarket. I understand that aftermarket may require some drilling/cutting, but not necessarily. Some would argue that the CCM is overkill for an aftermarket retrofit, impossible to connect without MB proprietary cables (for the average Joe like me, that is ), etc. I believe that it is possible to install a back-up cam without changing the HU, as I have seen other people report success connecting to the pins on the back of the HU, or have skipped this and modified their HU's with those ribbon conversions & RGB interface kits.

I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to this, but I know with the proper guidance, I can do it. If you have any experience with this & can offer advice, I would appreciate it.

Who said that you dont have a hole in the metal part of the car ?

I have personally only seen door handles with no holes but always seen a hole where there was supposed to be one in the actual metal. The R-class even had the handle too.

CMOS or not it is only in use for 1 minute. So before you order a JVC 1-inch 4 megapixel surveilance camera with day/night switching I would revise the information by removing the tailgate cover and looking at the holes in the metal.

I'll check, but I was going on the advice from a person at comandonline, and also some images on ebay of a door/tailgate/boot pulled from various wrecks. One has it, the other does not: 06 07 08 09 Mercedes ML350 Trunk Lid Tailgate Liftgate | eBay

vs. 06-09 MERCEDES ML TRUNK LID LIFT GATE OEM | eBay

Before the long task (for me) of taking the panelling off to get to the door frame, first I tried "peeking" with a strong flashlight in between the small gap of the handle & the door, and I couldn't see a cover for the hole. I am assuming that if it had a hole, it would be covered with a rubber gasket thingy because I saw an image of this a 2009 ML as a person was documenting their camera installation.

As for the camera, I have a few sources that can supply me with either the Sony or Sharp CCD (not ebay) for wholesale. I've seen reviews from some people that the CMOS cameras don't perform well in very low or high temperatures, and in low lighting. Then again, I wouldn't know from personal experience.

I came across an early ML without a cutout in the metal (or in the plastic). My 07 came with cutouts in both.

When we replace USA MCS_II with COMAND NTG2 we use an adapter and re-wire the pin 1/7 wires from USA car to the green fakra on W164 NTG2 with reversing camera.

I don't know if all US MCS-II have the reversing camera circuitry internally - not all EU NTG2 have the green fakra though

The little power supply for MB ML reversing camera ends up clipped in left hand side of the boot sort of by where the inner wing ends somewhat near the rear light cluster.

Its therefore worth checking if you have any connectors tied up there not connected to anything as that could be from the pins 1/7 connections that are there.

PS, the genuine mercedes ML camera is *very* good - much better than my wife's 2008 X5 camera !

In low lighting the reversing lamps act as lights.
