Cool COMAND navigation cannot be activated

Hello to anyone reading this. I am new to this forum and new to Mercedes ownership, having recently bought a CLK convertible. Armed with excellent help and advice from this forum I made the upgrade to COMAND. Mostly it went well...a bit scarey but when completed the radio and CD changer worked fine. However when I press NAV all I can get is "navigation cannot be activated an error has occurred". I've double and triple checked the plugs and connections and all seems well. Am I missing something simple or is there a chance I have a duff unit? Do I need to load up some software? I am still waiting delivery of the Tele Atlas CD but presume start up doesn't need this. Part no of the unit is A208 820 44 98. I hope someone can point out some foolishness on my part...any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks....told you I was a rookie! Somehow I was expecting an insert CD message or something similar. Map disc should arrive next week.

Now have the disc installed and all seems to be working. I understand that I now need to switch a pin in the diagnostic connector. Is this simple? I don't seem to be able to access the back of the connector to get at the pins. I remove the 2 screws retaining the large round connector but there is not enough cable to be able to lift it out and get at the back...or am I barking up the wrong tree altogether. Help very welcome. This is in a CLK 208 facelift.
