Question CLK 2002 facelift Audio Advice Needed.

Hi,
Can you please advise ?
I have a UK, 2002, 240 CLK coupe which is a facelift model (with later style dash/centre console ect).
The problem is finding information for a stereo retrofit.
It currently has an Audio 10 Radio/Cassette with multi changer but enquiries that i have made all conflict with each other.
Some Audio suppliers say if i fit an aftermarket head unit i will lose steering wheel control as theres no suitable lead available, others say that i need a CANBus lead, others a Multiplex lead.
Is there a definative way of finding out what can/cant really be done because some of these leads are expensive and more so if they dont work.
If it is of any help, i have disconnected the M/changer and the connectors are as follows:
1 Small blk connector with 2 electrical wires.
1 larger connector with 2 brown sheathed fiber optic cables.

Any help you can give with this would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Jase.

For a select number of head units which are non-Mercedes there is a CAN box available which reads the CANBUS-B and handles the radio seek and volume.

If you are really lucky it also then handles the phone function as many of these headunits also have Bluetooth.

As you have indicated the whole setup is very hit-and-miss. Some have and some dont so it will be necessary to determine which headunit has the prospect of handling the Mercedes inputs.

You may want to scan over ebay Germany. Search for "Mercedes CAN" or "Mercedes CANBUS" and see which interface cables are available and work backwards from there.

Once you have the list of possible suppliers / brands you can line up the matching sound systems and see which one you like best.

You could also fit comand which will give you colour screen satellite navigation, better sound and work with your CD multichanger. This has the benefit of working fully with your steering wheel controls and instrument cluster.

Thankyou for your advice.
i will scout around some German websites to see whats on offer.
One other thing, would the `Comand` unit be just a plug and play affair or is there more wiring to consider and would i be right in saying that it would need pairing with my car at the dealers ?

Thanks again for your help.
Jase.

Comand is plug and play with a small (cheap) loom adapter. Coding by the dealer is not mandatory but is needed if you want the navigation instructions to appear in the instrument cluster as well as on the Comand screen.

Comand is the only option that will fully integrate with your existing steering wheel controls and instrument cluster.

Mostly it will integrate easily but if people want something modern, they can buy a CAN interface.

Thanks again for your invaluable help, the comand unit looks like the best way forward.
What`s the `cheap` lead that i need and where can i get one.
P.s. will i need to search for a certain model number range for the comand i need ?

Thanks,
Jase.
