Default Airmatic Compressor wont shut off, remains on

Hi, looks like i have an airmatic problem on my 2002 S500?
yesterday after first starting and after 10 mins into journey i noticed the Airmatic compressor (in front of front right wheelarch) had remained on, when i stopped the car and shut off the ignition and locked it the compressor remained on and appeared to be reaching the max pressure as i could hear a short blast of air released but it continued to pump, the only way i could shut it off was to remove the 40A fuse in the right hand fuse box?

Ive heard there is a relay that can fail that causes this? where is this located?
or maybe there is a pressure sensor somwhere?

after i removed the fuse i continued to use the car yesterday without problem, no error messages and the suspension remained level?

if anyone can give me any advice it would be much appriciated!
Thanks, Mark

i use the car every day so its never been left 3 days so hard to say what happens?
but i think ive solved the problem, after some searching about the airmatic relay ive descovered its relay 'O' in right hand engine compartment fuse box (as viewed from sitting in car), the black square relay on left hand bank nearest front in fusebox.
its a standard normally open relay and after i bent the retain tab for the contact return spring slightly normal operation appears to be resumed, although i will replace the relay this week, tried to get a replacement this weekend but could only find a 30A rated one and as the fuse for the airmatic is 40A i'll prob visit MB dealer and pay 4 times more.
incidently for anyone who has this problem it should be noted the fuse to remove to cut power to the airmatic pump and save it is the center of the 3 large 40A fuses in the right hand fuse box!

Thanks for your attention to this BenzModz, here's hoping the prob is cracked!
