Default e coupe 250/350 cdi

I am going to buy a new mercedes e coupe and i was planning to get the 250cdi version. I know i wont have the same horsepowers and so, but i think 250 cdi is good enough for me ( i do a lot of highway driving everyday) and cheaper too. So i have two questions?
*in mercedes they say 250cdi would use much less gas than 350cdi even outside cities. I have heard people claiming that in highways gs comsumption is aprox the same, is it true?
* i have also heard that 250 cdi has a less reliable engine than 350cdi and that the 250cdi is having much more trouble than 350cdi. Is it true?

thanks a lot for your help

I do not know about the reliability, but with diesels the more you press the pedal the more fuel is injected - so it could well be that consumption is similar from both (but 250 just nearer its limit) on a motorway.

There are some amazing remapping services that will remap the smaller ones and make them almost the same as the larger ones but return better economy. Many of the Mercedes technicians I know have had them done and are very happy (and say MB can not detect it has been done)

Sorry not to answer all your points.

Small engines dont always consume less fuel because it depends on the power to weight ratio.

I recently had the joy of renting a very thirsty full-size 4WD for transferring large amounts of equipment. I found that the way I drove the car the 4L V6 was consuming less fuel than my 2L 4cyl Mercedes.

First of all the momentum of the heavy car meant that I was coasting for a large part of the trip. This is where very small engines stuggle to save fuel in generating torque to move the car from a standing start.

The other thing to note is whether or not the 250 is 5 speed transmission and whether or not the 350 is 7-speed. In highway touring the 7 speed can save more fuel will more ratio options.

BTW, there also seems to be an injector issue with the 250CDI ..
