I'd appreciate any help in working out how to remove a Comand 2.0 facia and unit from my SL350 (2004 model) - and any other advice or tips. I'd like to install a media interface kit and DVB-T tuner however, I'd like to find out how to properly remove the system before starting. I've tried various searches to see if there is any listing or instruction on how to do this properly but have been unable to find anything instructive to date. A picture of my system is attached.

The removal itself is not that difficult.
If you peel back the carpet you will notice that there are two kinds of screws holding the wood in. One type attaches the wood to the frame and the other type (I seem to recall 6) holds the frame to the car. What you want to do is identify the larger, less numerous screws and remove them. They are symmetical on both sides and there are a couple under the shifter cover. I seem to recall that I would first remove the armest by unclipping the side panels and then using a long T20, inside the armrest there are 2 holes for the screws to be loosened from the frame which holds the wood. There are also some floor bolts which hold the armrest to the car. This is not a difficult removal but it has its challenges. You are best off to ask a few questions at the local garage to the head technician.

I did one a couple of weeks ago (this was a car with CD based COMAND)
a) Move seats to back and down, and remove the gearshift cover / gearshift lever (it just all prizes out) b) The bit Benzmodz refers to as carpets are in fact leather covered, and unclip when levered with a suitable plastic wedge - they are held in with about 8-10 clips each, work from front backwards and dont bend too much c) Remove the bolts Benzmodz mentions (3 on each side) d) The whole wood/metal part then comes out, but remove from the top - this may be easier in Neutral, but dont forget the parking brake and to put it back in Park after its all unclipped. Watch the ashtray, may be easier with it open. Disconnecting all the wires whilst removing the lot requires some agility, and probably best with someone holding the very expensive centre console wood/metal piece. Richard |
