Question False Alarms

The alarm on my car has started going off for no apparent reason. I've looked for stuck switches and the obvious things..... Also, one time the compressor (?) under the bonnet kept starting up. The alarm will stop with the key button, but often starts up again. Any clues?

Car is a 53 plate Eclass saloon.

As strange as this may sound, now is the time of year that the spiders are looking for anywhere warm.

Have a good look for spiders webs in the car, especially near the movement sensors (middle of roof i think) - if nothing is obvious, then look immediately after you have silenced the alarm as that is when any spider is wandering out of any possible hole it is living in.

Thanks Richard, Others have mentioned similar things.... Where are the sensors? I couldn't see any. Are there any in the boot or under the bonnet?

Also, today's episode was not a clear and 'normal' siren sound. It sounded like a kids toy that was running out of batteries after having been dunked in the bath - only much louder. Carried on for 20 minutes the just stopped. Wierd!

I think the sensors are on a panel in the middle of the roof lining (i.e in the car - possibly in the panel with the rear light.

The siren could have got wet also ! You say it carried on for 20 minutes - couldn't you stop it ? Or did you just ignore it ..

My next step with diagnosis if you can't find spiders is to put it on Star Diagnosis - that means a trip to dealer or an independant with a Star diagnosis or one of the better alternative diagnosic machines.

No The ??###@@!!! thing would not stop! I tried locking/unlocking starting/opening and closing doors locking and unlocking again! After 20 minutes it just stopped.

Is there a compressor under the bonnet? - it comes on and runs for about 30 seconds. It sounds like a small compresor or pump or something - WOZITFOR?

The pump thing is the SBC brake pump, it primes when you unlock (or open) the doors (for instance), although running for 30 seconds seems long.

I just suppose it could be a battery issue though - but theres 2 to cause confusion :-)

At this point, I'm afraid your car needs to go into Star Diagnosis to check the alarm. 20 mins is a long time to run, especially as it sounded odd. I'd mention the brake pump running for 30 seconds also. So , a trip to the dealer is going to have to be the next step.
