Question Defective Display Message

Hi everybody.

I have a CL500 2002 year. When I start the engine the display works fine from left side of wheel's buttons. Suddenly a message appears in dash: DEFECTIVE DISPLAY and buttons no longer scroll up/down.

Kindly some of you have any tip or clue of this issue? I already checked with scanner but no failure appears on it..

Many thanks in advance,
-Ronnie

Something has been added with software coding to the car and now the car is really annoyed, or the display really is defective.

Remove any coding from the car which states a hardware is present but is not actually installed.

Thanks Mr. Guru for your feedback.

There is nothing added with software coding. When I put the main key then the display works fine from wheel's scroll buttons. Just when I start the engine suddenly after around 30 seconds display stop working and only show DEFECTIVE DISPLAY message.

Is it really defective despite it works fine before start the engine?
Same results I got from KeylessGo button. Updated scanner doesn't detect the failure, and that's very strange.
Thanks anyway. I'm afraid I must pay tons of $ in the MB dealer to fix it.

Unless you have a scanner that scans the non-emissions related components (i.e one set up specially for Mercedes) it wont be checking error codes on anything except the transmission/engine-mananagement.

So, really, it needs to be put on Star Diagnosis (which is an answer I hate giving!)

There is a recall on the S class (and I presume the CL) cluster for around 2002 which causes the backlight to fail, so maybee you should remind them of that to see if they will do at a sensible (or free!) price

Cheers

Richard
