Can anybody tell me if there is a formula to reset the airbag light on my wife's 2008 B Class SE diesel please. Having skidded on ice and careered into a wall it resulted in the steering wheel airbag and drivers seatbelt deploying.
I have replaced the airbag, seatbelt and airbag module, however, the red SRS light and the message centre are activated and need resetting. Can anybody kindly help me find a way to reset this or will I need to send it off to the main dealer for rectification. Many thanks. |

It can only be done with Star or an alternative plugged in.
A good independant (rather than MB) should have a machine. BUT please ensure that there is no safetly related damage anywhere, and have any sensors in the area of impact checked. If you replaced the airbag controller with a new one you will need to visit a MB dealer or an indendant with a genuine supported Star machine as it needs doing by someone with Star Diagnosis that can do SCN coding properly (which requires username/password on MB system) The airbag controller is "once only" coding, i.e if replacing a new part is needed and it needs coding with a genuine Star Diagnosis machine that can genuinely do SCN coding. I'm reasonably sure that the airbag controller will keep a log of the deployment for ever (and if you put a new one in, the MB central database will know that you have SCN coded it) - so just be aware that there may be implications for insurance if you were to have a nasty sometime and the insurance company not to know about this accident. Thanks Richard,
It's safe to assume that the sensible way to do this would be to book it into the dealer and have them check it out, once passed ok notify the insurance company that the airbag has been replaced. One other question, can you tell me where the crash sensors are located on the front of this vehicle please? I definately haven't replaced those as I, wrongly it seems, believed that the airbag was actuated electronically following the seatbelt actuation. Your help is greatly appreciated. Alan. |

There are a whole load of sensors that will have together caused the airbag and seatbelt tensioners to activate. Different saftey systems activate under different impacts.
I will try and find out more info for you. Richard |

Thanks Richard,
I'm a bit perplexed by it all now and begining to wish I'd let the insurance repair the car. The damage appeared to be so minor it didn't justify an insurance claim. Or so I thought!!! Thanks for your help I really appreciate it. |

Sounds like a good idea given that there are quite a few sensors involved, the diagnosis would no doubt flag up the affected sensors.
Before I go to my local independant MB garage in Maghull near Liverpool do you know of any of your site Gurus who may have busines close to me? I would much rather give my business to somebody involved in the site for the invaluable help you have given me. |

I think the matter is more fundamental. Initial startup has not been done on the main control unit.
That will remain a fault light till all the questions have been answered.

Thanks BenzModz, I agree the fault light shouldn't be removable until any outstanding issues have been resolved.
Presently trawling the Yellow Pages to find an independant with the right technology, the chap nearby my home doesn't have the software to rectify the SNC coding. Just to add to all of my woes, yesterday evening I did virtually the same thing on the ice in my 2008 CLK. Whilst returning from a hospital visit, the truck in front of me stopped awkwardly on the ice leaving me to glide into his swan neck tow bar whilst listening to the accompanying sound of the abs searching in vain to find some grip. Goodbye bumper, grille, and radiator pack (surprisingly no airbags)? Welcome to 2010! Why, when we have a bit of snow here in England does the whole infastructure grind to a halt? I used to live in Nuremberg, Germany where they have SNOW! The roads there were ploughed and gritted at the first snowfall! Last edited by manstirr; 01-07-2010 at 12:08 PM. Reason: update |
