Default Comand w220 telephone unavailable

Hello everybody! I am really thankful for this board/forum.
Successfully swapped US->EURO COMAND on my 05 US W220. Version coded at the dealer, as well. Now able to play US DVDs (safely, not in motion). However, I am unable to use the phone/bluetooth. Able to pair with module/puck but COMAND still reads telephone unavailable. Per Star Diagnosis "CTEL cellular telephone" set to PRESENT. Any suggestions? By the way, phone/bluetooth worked with the US COMAND prior to swap. Thank you so very much again to MB Guru!!!

That is strange as the MOST ring is coded in the AGW (which you have not changed) - the COMAND is just a display unit.

I have seen trouble with a phone controller once when I changed the handsfree (microphone controller) for a VCS (linguatronic) one. I fixed it by going through the 'initial startup' coding sequence for the phone controller. I would do that.

Also, I have some recall that there is a setting somewhere for telling the system it has a US phone rather than an EU phone. I thought that was in the AGW but it could be in the COMAND, so i'd get the dealer to look for that setting first.

The MOST ring in the USA has an MHI controller and the most ring in Europe has an UHI controller. The EURO COMAND will refuse to have a conversation with an MHI control module.

Please say it isn't so BenzModz. I was wondering whether just "hard" resetting the COMAND would do the trick. Based on the print out from the dealer, a phone is present. I'm thinking that the COMAND still recognizes the original phone from the previous owner of the unit. I will try Richard's suggestion as well. I don't want to give up just yet. Thanks again to the GURUs. Regards from across the pond.

Do try what I said, the W164 ML Euro COMAND units work with the USA MHI units (but phonebook doesnt always download).

W220 is NTG1 so different manufacturer and thus there will be differences
- Benzmodz also has *substantially* more experience on W220 then I have.

Hi, Richard. Headed off to the MB dealer tomorrow. I hope you can answer this before then. You guys are 8 hours ahead (in more ways than one). You can probably guess that they will not know how to do this so how do you actually access the menu for the phone controller & how do you get to the 'initial startup' coding sequence for the phone controller, is it thru DAS/Star Diagnosis? And where do you access the setting for telling the system it has a US phone rather than an EU phone?
In the event that this does not work, Benzmodz, can I fix this by changing the MHI phone control module to UHI? Where can I buy it? Went on the VISEEO website and their bluetooth module allegedly works for both UHI & MHI. Any suggestions? By the way, you are 18 hours ahead (way ahead of us all).
Thank you once again, gurus!!!

Hi, came back from the dealer. Watched them go through STAR, did the initial startup sequence to no avail. No option to choose between EURO to US phone. I am now considering swapping the UHI phone control module to MHI control module. Anybody know the MB part number, anybody selling it, how much + shipping to US? Benzmodz, you were right!!

Any of these part numbers are good: -

A211 820 14 85
A211 820 92 85
A211 870 00 26
A211 870 27 26
A211 870 39 26

Talk to sales@comandeurope.com - they may have a spare / used unit as they are doing lots of upgrades to Hard Disk Comand at the moment.

Thanks, Richard. I'm doing a step-by-by-step troubleshooting myself. I tried a different phone yesterday and yes, it did pair with the BT module but the euro COMAND still says telephone unavailable. I have ordered a euro HPF BT module (B6 787 5877) to replace my US BT module (B6 787 6131). If that still doesn't work, I will have to replace the MHI module (A219 8202626) with a UHI module. I emailed comandeurope.com yesterday and they do have a UHI controller but I'm also considering just getting the entire phone retrofit kit for MOST based cars online from comandonline.co.uk depending on this follow-up question. Is the wiring for the microphone, UHI phone controller, cradle connector, fibre optics, wakeup splices etc. the same as the US W220? If so, I probably just need the controller then.

I beleive the wiring is the same and you should be OK with just the controller.

I doubt its the cradle, but no harm.
