Default Comand 2.0 retrofit on a 1999 W220 S320

Firstly, I would really like to thank you in advance for any help you can provide as I am getting stuck and I don't want to damage my car. I was about to give up on this, when I have seen another S class of the same year with a Comand 2.0 in place and now I am going to look into this one last time.

I have been looking into this now for quite some time, check masses of forum information and contacted several members for help and advice (some of whom who have been fantastic in providing their thoughts and have indicated that this is possible and actually easy to complete!)

The situation:
I have a Comand 2.0 unit which I would like to retrofit to a 1999 (W220 - one of the first) s320. My s320 has a standard radio cassette (Audio 10 unit - I think?).

I understand from details I have read and from users of various forums that it is possible to adapt the wiring loom from the radio cassette to use the Comand 2.0, but, I would not have TV or Sat Nav. This is not a problem. The main reason I want to complete the swap is to update my vehicle, but, also the existing radio display is broken and so hard to use.

Am I correct in thinking that the Comand 2.0 unit would work if I can get hold of a C1 and C2 loom and wire in pins 1,2,3,5 and 6 from my C connector to the relevant pins on a new C1 and C2 connector (to be obtained – if anyone knows where is best to buy this?)

That is:
Wire C pin 5 to C1 pin 6 - this would provide the power to the CD changer
C pin 6 to C1 pin 5 - this would provide the power to the CD changer
C pin 1 to C2 pin 9 - which provide steering wheel control functions
C pin 2 to C2 pin 8 - which provide steering wheel control functions
C pin 4 to C2 pin 10 - which provides D2B wake up

Are these the ONLY additional connections required for the Comand 2.0 to work with radio, boot CD changer and DVD?

I understand that C1 pins 1, 2 and 3 are for TV viewing and if I am not bothered about watching TV, these are not necessary? (i.e. TV Red, TV Green and TV Blue), or have I got this wrong and these 3 connections provide the screen image rather than additional TV for watching?

I would really appreciate if you are able to confirm that the above is true and possible and that I would have a functioning Comand 2.0.

My questions are:
1. Is the above correct in terms of wiring and this would mean I could get a Comand 2.0 to work?
2. Where is the best place to get hold of C1 and C2 connectors
3. Better still, is there an adapter for the W220 which will complete the C connector to C1 and C2 connections for me?
4. Is there anything else I should be aware of?
5. Is there anyone out there who has experience of a Comand 2.0 fit to an early W220 with a standard radio cassette and if you can guarantee your work, would you like to be paid to complete this for me?

If it is as straight forward as the above, I would probably attempt this retrofit, but, would really welcome confirmation before I start to pull my car to pieces.

Sincere thanks to anyone who can help.

Please confirm that you want to retrofit the widescreen COMAND2.0 system (i.e MY2003) and not the earlier Comand2.5 system

If you are doing that, I suggest you use this adapter loom: -

Comand Online Ltd :: Mercedes SatNav/COMAND :: COMAND Retrofit parts :: W203 last C Class & CLC, W209 CLK, W463 G :: Comand wiring loom adapter for W208 CLK, W210 E, W203 C, W209 CLK, W463 G Class

First of all you need to buy the full factory harness so that you can get all the connections you need.

There is 50% of the wires missing already so moving pins around is going to prove that it still wont work.

But this only applies to COMAND 2.5 BOSCH

Just for final clarification .

If you're going to fit the Comand 2.5 system (fitted up until MY2002 inclusive) you will need to do what Benzmodz says. That system was designed for your age car.

If you are going to fit the widescreen COMAND 2.0 MOPF as fitted in MY2003, then you can do it with the adapter loom. I have been told (by 2 or 3 people who have done this) that it works, but I have not tried it myself.

Also, You will need new wood trims etc, and be careful when buying the MY2003 Comand 2.0 widescreen as there are 2 varieties that look identical, one has navigation facility and one does not.

I have been away a little while and was about to give up on this when I saw these really helpful responses, now I am re-energised to try again.

Just to confirm I have been told to avoid the Comand APS as this will give me too much of a headache and am now considering the Mercedes S-Class Comand 220 Navigation System 2003. I will look at the part number and submit this later on.

Just to check - to fit the above would I need both the original full wiring loom with C1, C2 connectors, etc. and the comand wiring loom adapter?

It would be great to have navigation, however, I am more interested in just having the widescreen system functioning for radio and CD, navigation would be a bonus, but, not a must have - would it simplify things without navigation?

Finally, does anyone know of someone experienced who may be interested in completing this conversion and fitting this for me? Also, any idea what the cost be?

Sincere thanks in advance. I am now excited to complete this and with the better weather, happy to spend a few hours trying to figure this out and complete it.

You will be more well informed if you acquire the original loom. The loom teaches you a lot about the car.

Thanks - any thoughts on the easiest way to get hold of a complete loom and also the wiring details?

The Comand I am looking at is the A220 820 58 89 - is this appropriate for a vehicle that has never had Comand? Thanks in advance.

The loom can be ordered from Mercedes. Or find a car with the options you want and then order from that chassis number. If you have a friend who works at Mercedes ask them if they are willing to print out the wiring scheme for this car.

Is this a Comand My2003? It is model number: A220 820 58 89

Also, the adapter, is it really simply plug and play into my existing connectors?

I seem to have 4 main connectors for my radio cassette deck:

1. Which I think is the main power to the unit
2. Power to the CD changer in the boot
3. Speakers
4. D2B optical connection

I also have 2 radio antenna connectors (1 normal size, the other appears to be a very small style antenna connector).

I would be more than happy with the CD version of the Comand and to play CD's through the head unit.

Sincere thanks for your help.
