Hello everyone! Newbie here. I recently purchased a used 2001 Mercedes E200 Estate which came with a factory installed Nokia 5110 phone and cradle. It also come with an Audio 10 CD HU and a CD changer in the boot. The phone works fine and interrupts the radio signal and volume when a call comes in. However, when I try to answer the call via the steering wheel buttons, the information displayed on the dashboard says "function not available". If however, I answer the call via the buttons on the phone itself, the call comes in through the radio and I can adjust the volume of the call via the steering wheel audio buttons. Do I need to have this coded at the Mercedes dealer for the steering buttons to work in answering and ending a call? Or, do I have to buy something else in order for this to work? I have read most of the threads in the audio and navigation but cannot see that this has been question has been asked or discussed. Digging through the cables near the CD changer, I saw a phone controller with the following #: A203-820-32-26. Aside from the black wire loom, I saw 2 orange or red nylon wires attached to this phone controller. I presume theses orange or red nylon wires are the fiber optic wires some of the threads discussed. One had an "Ampli" tag or marker while the other one had a "Telephone" tag. Any suggestions on making the steering buttons work to answer and end call would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If you cycle through the audio menus on the cluster and there is no Phone menu, then the dealer needs to enable the 'Phone' option on the instrument cluster, which will enable the steering wheel phone buttons
R ps, yes the orange 'wires' are fibre optics. |

Thanks Richard! Will visit the dealer maybe next week. I have a follow-up question, if you don't mind. While trying to get the phone to work a few days ago, I reset the computer to original factory settings following a suggestion from one of the forums. I did not know that it would reset the dashboard display to the German language from the previously set English language. Is there a simple way to revert it back to English language or do I also have to visit the dealer for this? Been driving it since then while trying to decipher what the German words mean. Thanks in advance for any help. Best Regards.

You have to decipher it, or wait until you see the dealer !! Language is "sprache" (or there abouts)
When the dealer is coding the phone buttons, ask him to set the default language to English ! (I think thats possible on that cluster) Richard |

Okay, will do that when I visit the dealer to activate the steering wheel buttons. Thanks a million Richard!!! I really do appreciate it. Should this thread be closed already or will it be alright to wait until after I see the dealer next week? Regards,

Hi again Richard!
I have visited the dealer and their Star computer recognizes that the phone is indeed installed. The Star computer shows that the first accessory installed is the CD changer then the phone as 2nd accessory. However, the steering wheel buttons to answer and end calls still do not work. The steering wheel volume controls work on radio and telephone calls. The dealer informed me that I had to buy a new cradle with part number 203.820.04.51 at at a cost of more than US$500! I was reviewing the phone bulletins from Paul Dick's site when I got home and it says that the D2B ring configuration should be: Radio (D2B Master) then Phone (D2B component 1) then Voice Recognition (D2B component 2) then CD Changer (D2B component 3) then TeleAid (D2B component 4) then back to Radio. I don't think my car has Voice Recognition and TeleAid so the D2B ring in my case should be: Radio then Phone then CD Changer then back to Radio. Am I correct? Therefore, shouldn't the dealer's Star computer show the phone as the 1st accessory and the CD Changer as the 2nd accessory installed and not the other way around? Can this be the cause why the steering wheel buttons to answer and end a call still does not work? I hope you will still see this post and can provide an insight as to what I should do next. Thanks in advance and Best Regards, Xennon |

Ring order is not actually important, as long as actual and configured are the same (and even if they are different, I haven't seen any repeatable problem!)
All the dealer needs to do is a) plug star in b) go into the instrument cluster settings ('control unit adaptations') and turn on the Telephone (or iPod) option - This enables the telephone menu on the cluster and the phone hangup/pick-up buttons on the steering wheel ... They should know this, they do it when they install iPod kits in the newer models. Richard |
