Question Replacing Audio 20 CD with Comand NTG 2.5 in W169

Hello,

I have just bought a Class A W169 last december in France with a Audio 20 CD and bluetooth/hands free telephone facility.

I am thinking of replacing it with a Comand NTG 2.5 which seems to be the latest version. Is this possible and what adaptors/wiring do I need ?

Thanks for your advice

David

- Navigation system
- MAP CD
- Antenna for GPS

- also SCN coding for car.

NB, for others reading this thread, this assumes the car is a NTG2.5 car (i.e with Audio-20 with bluetooth built in), some cars also need a antenna splitter to split the 1 antenna to the 2 inputs on COMAND NTG2.5.

Question

Does the SCN coding mean that only a Mecedes agent can do the replacement ?

No.

The upgrade can be perormed by anyone with the required parts and knowledge. The comand unit itself may well need coding by the main dealer if it is coded for say Harman Kardon and you dont have HK for that year installed in the car. In general though these units are fitted and work straight away. The one thing you will need if you want the instrument cluster to show the directions aswell is SCN coding or someone with in-depth knowledge of STAR in developer mode. If the car is a model year 2009 then you will definately need SCN coding for the cluster. Coding with STAR is a good idea anyway as you can make sure the unit is properly setup for your car and apply the latest telematics updates.

One thing to beware of though is that a number of Comand NTG 2.5 units are appearing that when installed in a car other than the one the unit came from, are shutting down due to theft protection mechanisms being activated.

It seems that the comand unit stores the chassis number of the original car inside. When you turn the ignition on it checks this against the chassis number of the car it is now in and if they dont match it shuts down. The only fix for this is going to someone with a genuine STAR system or your local dealer and having them reset it but of course they will know the chassis number the unit came from and will be able to check if it is stolen.
