Thumbs up W219 CLS COMAND HK iPod kit retrofit

Hi, Great site by the way!

I have a few quick questions linking to the www.mercupgrade.co.uk 'How to'
IPOD Retrofit in E, CLS Class

I have the kit B6 782 4239 and have COMAND system with HK sound, with the AGW in the rear.

Q1. At the front of the car (GLovebox) I have 3 separate cables on the loom, one that plugs into the ipod control unit (with grey clip) one orange one and a black on with a connector on the end. I understand the Black one with grey connector but where do the other 2 cables go exaclty?

Q2. At the boot (Trunk) end - I have a blue connector, a single core brown cable, an earthing cable and another black connector.
-Does anybody have a picture diagram of where all these cables plug in....and also in the instructions "Remove the screw below the DVD navigation unit, then you can rotate the bracket with navigation unit forward so you can see the rear of the fusebox." I removed the single 10mm bolt and nothing moves, there is 3 bolts underneath the unit and 1 I can't even get a spanner on - any help is much appreciated.

Regards,

Carl

The 3 way connector goes into the back of the COMAND unit (instead of the AUX cable)
The 2 way connector (with brown,brown/red) wires goes into the CANbus distributor which is fixed to the bottom of the aircon system, you can see it by looking up under the passenger footwell when the panel is removed. This is shown in the last picture in section (e) in my document.

The wire in the blue connector and the single core brown cable are the CANbus (note they are twisted together). They replace the same colour wires in the AGW fibre connector, and the wires you remove go into the blue connector shell so they do not short out. Earth goes to the earthing point in the boot, the black power connector plugs into the back of that rear fusebox, directly behind the blue connector - as shown in the 1st picture in section (e).

You havent pulled well enough. The 10mm bolt is a single bolt directly below the navigation unit 'hole' on the left hand side (when looing straight at the unit). This allows the top half of the bracket to rotate on the 2 hinges you can see on the right hand side of the bracket.

Once you have removed the top half of the bracket it the pictures will make a lot more sense

If your car has dynamic seats, then the dynamic seat pump mechanism can get it the way a bit.

Thanks very much Richard!

I am on my driveway typing this as I fix my car! Couple more quick questions please...

Does it matter which hole it goes in ? does it have to be bunched with the rest or can I fit it in the last one as that one went in easy!

This is reassuring, I though the single brown cable had come out of the blue plug by acccident. So to clarify.. I take a brown and brown/red cable out of the AGW and place them in the blue plug. The remaining cable go in the AGW.

Earth to Earth point - done

Black power connector - will do that when I can get the unit out.

Dynamic seats? - I have a box about the size of a 6 pack of beer to the left of the DVD unit - is this causing me the grief?

No, but you must release the lock on the connector before inserting or it will fall out later

Yes, but they must be in the correct order and you musnt short them together. Don't plug the power in for the iPod kit until you have done the CANbus wiring.

The reason they are supplied with 1 disconnected, is so that you do them one by one rather than taking both out and getting it back wrong/shorted. So do the brown one first, then the brown/red

Richard - Can't thank you enough - you definately helped me along with this one! NEver thought I'd tackle a job like this on a car like a CLS but it is just wires at the end of the day!

I managed to get it done this morning, all operational - however the volume is low !

I take it I just need one of these .....

Comand Online Ltd :: iPod & Media Interface Kits :: Last-E & CLS Class (W211/W219) :: Mercedes iPod line amplifier

Thanks Again

Carl

Hi,

Well done !! Its always great to get your first retrofit done, and the strip-down for the W211 E / W219 CLS is actually quite significant. Also, much more rewarding than paying someone else to do it !!!

Yes, the iPod line amplifer you refer to above will boost the (low) volume

Hi Guys,

I have recently fitted the Ipod kit and have also added the line amplifier which i bought from COMAND UK.

I have plugged this 'in-line' and it definately boost the audio volume BUT at the cost of quality!

Does anyone have any recommendations to improve sound quality as I listen to all sorts of music from Dance music to Classical and Bass is distorted and sounds worse than FM Radio quality.

Is there a specific setting which has worked for you? I have a 160GB Ipod Classic with all songs set to POP setting as I heard this was best - obviously not!

Thanks

Carl

You can try removing the line amp and adjusting the volume limit on the ipod controller using the 'down arrow' phone hangup key sequence. This is most likely already at maximum. The other thing to make sure of is that the ipod equalisation is turned off. This is the setting that makes all tracks the same volume. Sadly its the volume of the quietest one

Also try leaving line amp in, and turning down the setting in the hidden menu.

See here for the hidden menu details: -

iPod Volume too low fixes
