I am getting an E220 CDI with the Navigation 50 upgrade rather than full Comand. As I understand it, this is a DVD based navigation system that only plays DVD's audio discs rather than movies. I wonder whether it is possible to make it play DVD video discs?

I suspect it is missing the MP4 (video) decoder chip, like the older NTG2.5 system which has a DVD drive but only plays CDs (and no MP3 either)

Yes sadly

But, it may be worth (if you ever get the chance) taking one apart next to a COMAND unit just in case they used the same stuff inside but different software only. Very unlikely, but they did that on the 2003 S/CL Widescreen CD based COMAND systems with and without navigation. I never managed to get a s/w update to update the non navigation systems though.
