Default W203 Comand APS - Coding?

I understand that "coding" the Comand using Star diagnosis will allow navigation instructions to be displayed on the instrument cluster. Does it achieve anything else?

My Comand seems to do everything - phone, Ipod, Audio etc all work OK. The navigation shows the map of Europe OK, but I'm still waiting for the Australian map disk. Is it essential to get it coded - my stealer quoted $300+ , but the local indie only wants 150.

It is only irrelevant if servicing the car at its intervals is not relevant.

Get the indie to do it, or get the dealer to do it at the next service (when they should charge you less)

There is evidence that COMAND is more reliable if coded properly for the vehicle (telling it which items are in which order on the fibre optic bus). There is also a firmware update for units from before early 2006 which removes a few bugs.
