NTG2.5 after about firmware 06/2009 needs a PIN code, so that suggests MY2010 will all need a PIN code.

The PIN code is kept by Mercedes alongside the data for the car the unit is installed in (in VeDOK) - so obtaining it without the vehicle is likely to be impossible.

That will hopefully stop units being stolen.

The European one does not. So I would presume that the Asian one will not either - but never tried it

In fact, I will expand that answer ..

There is a system firmware update, the last one was Jan 2010, the previous was June 2009. This is installed by the dealer using Star Diagnosis and a disk that is supplied with the Star diagnosis release. The Star diagnosis system applies the update which updates everything that needs to be on the MOST fibre optic bus.

The June 2009 update seems to introduce the concept of PIN codes.

There are then (regular) map updates. They require a certain level of system firmware. Europe "2009/2010" needs the June 2009 version. I don't know what South East Asia needs, it is written on the packet.
