Default W211 E270cdi Audio Cassette Upgrade

    Hi everyone,

I've got a Dec 2002 E Class 270cdi, it's a fantastically reliable low mileage car regularly returning over 51 mpg on a run, however there is one thing letting it down, the stereo... It has i believe an Audio 20 Radio Cassette, i've not used tapes for years
I thought it would be easy to just buy a CD version of the same stereo from Ebay, have it fitted and job done, apparently not...
I'm looking for a system that will play mp3's and ideally have Bluetooth as well.
My local audio installer advised that for an aftermarket doubledin stereo with bluetooth I'd need a complete rewire and probably a better amplifier too.
I thought i could install a Parrot C9200 and hook up my mp3 player but apparently i dont have an aux jack? So this won't work. Behind my hazard lights is a small compartment which could hold the 6 disc changer, can i buy a 2nd hand one of these and install it or am i better going for a merc head unit, and what other parts will i need? At the moment im using my mp3 player through a free fm radio channel... nightmare. Thanks in advance for any advice given.

You can have the W211 2009 radio fitted which comes with bluetooth and CD.

I think I have one in stock ... I need to check on that.

Thanks, i take it that unit would be a straight swap? Would the 6 disc changer fit to my current stereo as an alternative? Would i realy need a complete rewire to fit an aftermarket stereo?

The connector is similar but the pins are totally different.

Thanks for the info. Has anyone had any experience with the Dynavin units?
This one seems to be a straight swap for my Audio 20 Cassette.
Half the price of a MB unit i suppose.

    OK, ive done more research

You have an Audio-20 Cassette. This systems uses a seperate amplifier/tuber (in the boot) called an AGW, unlike the later standard Audio-20 CD system which has the AGW functions built in. This means on Audio-20 Cassette the speaker/aerial wiring is in the boot (same true for Audio 50 APS & Comand) but the Audio-20 CD has all the wiring at the head unit itself.

You can therefore swop it straight for that colour NTG1 COMAND unit shown in your link. However that will not give you satnav until you add a navigation processor in the boot. That will need
    a) Navigation processor
    b) Wiring looms (copper and fibre)
    c) If car does not have parktronic then its going to need a new left boot carpet and a bracket & screws to hold the navigation processor
    d) GPS antenna.
    e) If you want TMC (traffic jam re-routing) you have to replace the AGW with a dual tuner AGW (about £300) so it can pick up the TMC whilst you are listening to another radio station.

Installing a Dynavin or later NTG2.5 is a pig because all the loudspeaker wiring goes to the boot, and on NTG2.5/Dynavin it needs to be at the front.

Comand Online have looms to do that job, but they are expensive looms as they are complicated looms.

PPS, of course you could install the CD changer in that compartment.

If buying a used CDC make sure it doesnt come from another country - used ones don't have the shipping bracket installed that protects the mechanism, so if kicked around in the post can reduce the life or break them

Richard, thanks for your help. I think i'll try & pick up a NTG 1 Command. These will simply be a straight swap?
I have a TomTom so not fussed about the sat nav function, but i do need bluetooth and mp3/cd functions.
Will i need any other parts to change the head units around?
The choice of units on Ebay and such like is bewildering & im reluctant to spend my hard earned on a unit that might not be suitable for my car.
