Default Command not show no cluster [W208 CLK]

I have a 2002 clk320 with the 2.0 command model # A2088203589. It developed a read error problem last weekend. It will not read audio CD or nav CD. Local stereo shop pulled the unit out of the car and determined that the disc drive is not functioning (it will spin but will not read and need a little help to eject the cd). All other functions are working (CD changer, radio, cluster display, etc.) prior to the removal. The command is now back in the car without the fixes to the disc drive and the cd changer and radio work. However, the command (audio and nav) is not showing on the cluster. Both audio and nav show ---- on cluster and not the normal "OFF" display. The command will not go off when car is turn off and key removed. I have to push the power button to turn the command off. The buttons on the steering wheel is also not working with the command. Two questions:

Is this problem a result of some connection not plug in properly? Where can I find a picture of the rear of the unit to see where everything goes? I remember there is one area in the back there are two slot on top of each other and he chooses the lower one. Could this have caused the problem?

Can I use a CD cleaner to try to clean the laser or just send it to midwest?

Thank you for any help you can give me.

Most likely you did not plug in the C2 connector properly. Its the 18 way connector above the 2 ISO connectors, and has a rotating latch which must be set flat, then as you push it in it rotates and locks.

I'd have suggested using a CD cleaning disk (type with little brushes) first. Then, if that didnt work when the unit was out to clean the laser head (you can get to it through the hole where the circular disk clamp is once the lid is off the unit. If that doesnt work then it needs a new laser. The mechanism that pulls the disk in/out is roller that gets greasy from your finger prints on the CDs, that can be reasonably cleaned when the front of the COMAND is off (which you should do before removing the top of the COMAND).

Back of COMAND: look at the pictures on eBay , someone should have the back of the comand pictured.

Richard,

Thank you for the quick response. I will give the CD cleaner a try as soon as I get the tool. Can you tell me which ISO connector I am suppose to use- top or bottom? About the C2 connector, what do you meant by set flat?

Thank you again for all the help.

I have used a cd cleaner with audio instruction and it played well in the COMAND cd slot. The COMAND recognised a cd in the 0 slot and the audio came out nice and clear. However, it won't recognised an audio cd I put in or the nav cd. Can someone tell me what could be the cause?

Thanks.

Sounds like the COMAND is not in good condition and the cabling is not adapted for the car.

Sometimes people sell the cars with very old navigation units and the wiring has not been upgraded to make a good connection. Or maybe the wiring has not been connected properly.

The COMAND has these connections

- 8 pin ISO A - power, reversing lamp, speed signal
- 8 Pin ISO B (speakers - BOSE option car does not have this)
- C1 - small 10 pin for CD stacker and TV
- C2 - wide 18 pin for wakeup, CAN, TV, AUX, speed signal 2

- Optical 2 orange cables

- GPS antenna - HRS GT5 connector

- Radio 2 cables - ISO radio connection and diversity SMB connector

After running the cd cleaner several time, it still won't play the nav or audio cd.

I have been able to get the cluster to see the COMAND briefly a couple times showing the cd track and radio on the cluster display. However, it went away to --- and I do not know why. I have check all the wiring and nothing seem to be loose. Can someone help me in understanding what could be the cause or which connector could be the problem. The unit continue to function with the radio and cd changer.

Thank you in advance.

The COMAND is connected to the car's network (CANbus) and so is the Instrument Cluster. The messages that appear on the cluster;s Audio (etc) screen and the volume / phone / arrow steering wheel buttons are sent over the CANbus.

It sounds like your COMAND has an issue talking to the CANbus which is either the wiring or the COMAND itself.

I would sort that out before starting on finding out further about the CD issue - but your CD laser could be dead, or physically very dirty and need cleaning with the unit apart.

Richard,

I have a pair of brown and red/brown wires connected to the C1 small 8 pin connector. Is that for the CANbus? Or is the CANbus wire part of the 16 pin C2 connector?

Thanks.

You are talking about the CD changer wires.
