I did one a couple of weeks ago (this was a car with CD based COMAND)

a) Move seats to back and down, and remove the gearshift cover / gearshift lever (it just all prizes out)
b) The bit Benzmodz refers to as carpets are in fact leather covered, and unclip when levered with a suitable plastic wedge - they are held in with about 8-10 clips each, work from front backwards and dont bend too much
c) Remove the bolts Benzmodz mentions (3 on each side)
d) The whole wood/metal part then comes out, but remove from the top - this may be easier in Neutral, but dont forget the parking brake and to put it back in Park after its all unclipped. Watch the ashtray, may be easier with it open.

Disconnecting all the wires whilst removing the lot requires some agility, and probably best with someone holding the very expensive centre console wood/metal piece.
