SAM is a Signal Acquisition Module - in the case of the front one it controls most things at the front of the car (head lights, wipers, indicators, fog lamps) - this includes the bulb failure mechansim, which expects to see normal lights not LED ones.

I dont know whether the connectors are the same between the LED running lamps vs normal fog lamps ..
